Description: In every corner of the world, children continue their modest existence despite all the things lacking in lives marked out by poverty, sickness, discrimination and violence. Do they still have the right to dream? Travelling from Montréal’s impoverished Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighbourhood to a Tanzania ravaged by AIDS and tuberculosis, and from an India oppressed by radical Islam to a Palestine devastated by daily violence, Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette and Arnaud Bouquet gave children a hat and a camera so that they could make up their own short scripts and then film them. With the hat as their only prop, the children imagine stories that, for a moment at least, allow them to take control of their lives. “So that they continue to resist through the power of their dreams and imagination. And above all—above all—so that we hear them.” A documentary tale for believing once again in the beauty of the world. Featuring doctor Gilles Julien and Yasser Arafat, filmed a few weeks before his death.

Biography: Born in Montréal in 1979, Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette made her first documentary in 2000, on her own theatre adaptation of The Little Prince by Saint-Exupéry, working with children from the slums of Honduras. She then entered INIS and made several feature reports, short features and documentaries. • Arnaud Bouquet studied film at INIS in Montréal and in Montpellier, France. His first short film, Mala vida, was shot in the slums of Brazil. He has since worked as a scriptwriter, researcher and cameraman on films by Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette, Fernand Dansereau and Carole Laganière and co-directed two documentaries with Anaïs.

Filmography: Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette: Les Petits princes des bidonvilles (2000), Les Mots bleus (2000), Sorcières comme les autres (2001), Buenos Aires, no llores (2001), Ceux qui savent encore rêver (2003), Les Mains du monde (2004) • Arnaud Bouquet: Mala vida (1998), Buenos Aires, no llores (2001)
