Programme: Shadows of the dead Description: August 14, 1945: Japan’s emperor surrendered to the Allied powers. War was over. The country turned the page on that dark chapter of history. But what of the crimes and atrocities committed by Japan during wartime? What of the terrible secrets of war—sexual slavery, massacres, slave labour camps, bacteriological and chemical experimentation units? What of Japan’s brutal occupation of neighbouring Asian countries? Can all that be wiped from memory as cleanly as it has been excised from Japanese high-school history textbooks? A number of courageous individuals have spoken out against government censorship and the status quo. They insist upon telling the whole story of war and confronting Japan’s responsibility for its crimes. The issues strike to the heart of Japan’s national identity. A tale of caution and hope.
