Montreal, Wednesday, August 19, 2009 – Montreal’s 12th international documentary film festival, Les Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal (RIDM), takes place November 11-21. The RIDM features an international program of more than 100 feature-length documentaries from some 30 countries. The range is astonishing, from the simply surprising to the fascinating and inspiring.
Quebec premieres include—at long last—HotDocs hit and Sundance award winner Burma VJ: Reporting From a Closed Country, an electrifying compilation of underground footage shot by local videographers determined to record the 2007 demonstrations against a repressive regime. Tens of thousands of civilian protesters marched in the streets, led by an armada of Buddhist monks.
Another Quebec film having its world premiere at the 12th RIDM is L’Art en action by Magnus Isacsson, a powerful and moving portrait of the founders of Socially Acceptable Terrorist Action. Annie Roy and Pierre Allard. The couple reconcile family life with a profound engagement with society, and Isacsson films them up close, never disguising his admiration for an exemplary integrity and generosity.
The RIDM is joining in a salute to Jean-Claude Labrecque as part of the retrospective organized by the Cinémathèque québécoise in November and December. We are hosting a tribute evening to celebrate a remarkable
event in Quebec’s documentary history. Forty years ago, Labrecque and Jean-Pierre Masse organized a poetry reading at the Gèsu to film the effervescence and rebellion of Quebec writing at the time. Gaston Miron got involved, and it became a happening, language and performance expressing the euphoria of a generation. Part One of the RIDM’s tribute evening will be a screening of their remarkable document, La nuit de la poésie 27 mars 1970. Labrecque and Masse would organize two other Poetry Nights, in 1980 and 1991. Now it’s our turn. Part Two will be a reprise Night of Poets and Poetry-Making featuring some of the people from those first events along with passionate slammers and poets for today.
Doc Circuit Montreal, now in its 5th year, is Quebec’s annual documentary marketplace event held in tandem with the RIDM. This year, it runs November 12 and 13. Doc Circuit Montreal is a must-attend event on the industry calendar, specifically designed to help directors, producers, distributors and broadcasters bring their knowledge up to date, set up partnerships and share ideas on documentary issues. It’s all about increasing documentary production at the local and international levels.
Venues for the 12th RIDM are the Cinémathèque québécoise, the NFB Cinema, the Agora Hydro-Québec in UQÀM’s Coeur des sciences building, the Grande Bibliothèque, the Segal Centre and the Goethe Institute. The RIDM is also working to extend its offerings beyond Montreal, with a program of documentaries in the city of Quebec, in partnership with the Musée de la civilisation de Québec.
