The 11th edition of the RIDM, which wrapped up on Sunday, was an outstanding success. With 23 500 visitors (an increase of 30% over last year's figure), the RIDM had an unprecedented increase and proved that the passion for documentary cinema continues to grow among spectators. This record attendance level marks the RIDM as a must attend event on the local and international cultural scenes.
Some of the high points this year include the numerous places for encounters and exchanges between filmmakers, film lovers and professionals; 40 foreign guests; festive evenings at the RIDM Lounge at the Cinémathèque québécoise; a diverse and exceptional program including the success of the new section "DocTape" and the films from the EcoCamera section; and a very successful 4th edition of Doc Circuit Montreal.
A festival that wears its name well...
The RIDM stands out as a meeting place par excellence. During the 4 round tables and workshops, 5 screening-discussions, 3 master classes, 1 forum and 5 special programs of short films followed by discussions, spectators were able to exchange with filmmakers and professionals on documentary cinema and the challenges raised. Five free presentations in the presence of the filmmakers at the Grande Bibliothèque and 3 café-croissants at the RIDM Lounge were also offered to the public, providing an introduction into documentary film and its creators without having to dive into their wallets! In total, more than 40 international guests came to Montreal for the RIDM, not including the presence of more than 30 Quebec filmmakers presenting their films.
The RIDM Lounge - a festive place!
For the first time this year, the RIDM turned the salle Norman MacLaren at the Cinémathèque québécoise into the RIDM Lounge, a place for 5 à 7s, cocktails and festive evenings. Visitors were taken by the charm of this warm and welcoming place: close to 8 000 visitors walked through its doors. For 11 days and 11 nights, the RIDM Lounge at the Cinémathèque québécoise vibrated to the rhythm of documentary film!
Out of the ordinary programming
More than 100 films from thirty countries were screened. Local productions held a select place in the programming, with more than 30 films from Quebec and Canada. With 23 world premieres, 14 international premieres and 26 North American premieres, the RIDM has marked itself on the international scene as a major festival of discovery in documentary cinema.
Doc Circuit Montreal: a very popular 4th edition
A brilliant success, the documentary marketplace brought together more than 200 professionals from here and abroad. It generated more than 500 encounters during the popular Face-à-face events. The participants boasted about the quality and the relevance of the round tables and workshops. The text from the workshop on freedom of expression, from Zénaïde Lussier (Lussier & Khouzam), can be found on the RIDM site in the section "professionals".
The RIDM would like to give a warm thank you to the public, the filmmakers and all the partners who each contributed to the real success met this year and to making the festival a place of encounters and enthusiasm.
