MONTREAL PREMIERES OF THE YEAR'S BEST DOCUMENTARIES 

Did you miss the Docville premiere at the Excentris? Were you there for the screening of Bombay Beach, but you still have an insationable thirst for documentary film? Don't worry, the RIDM is coming back February 23 with a screening of Duch: Master of the Forges of Hell from the renowned Franco-Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh.

Ten years after S21: The Khmer Rouge Death Machine, Panh continues his work preserving the memory of Khmer Rouge atrocities, with a portrait of Kaing Guek Eav, alias Duch, the former commander of the M13 and S21 prison camps. Between 1975 and 1979, the Khmer regime slaughtered 1.8 million people—a quarter of Cambodia’s population. As one of the key figures wielding the regime’s power, Duch is personally responsible for the deaths of more than 12,000 detainees at S21. In 2010, an international tribunal sentenced him to 35 years in prison for crimes against humanity, but Duch appealed. At the beginning of his appeal, Duch confessed to Panh, himself a survivor of the camps, where his parents and several other family members died. The filmmaker recorded some 300 hours of one-on-one interviews. His meticulous camera work and editing make the executioner’s unvarnished testimony all the more chilling and terrifying. The resulting film is an honest, enigmatic and thoroughly riveting portrait of a human being driven by a brutal ideology to commit monstrous acts.
