MONTREAL PREMIERES OF THE YEAR'S BEST DOCUMENTARIES 

The RIDM is coming back March 29 with the screening of Whores’ Glory from the Austrian director Michael Glawogger.

Following up Megacities and Workingman’s Death, Austrian director Michael Glawogger’s Whores’ Glory is the third instalment in a trilogy about the world of work around the globe. The film earned an Orizzonti Special Jury Prize at the most recent Venice Film Festival. Structured as a triptych, Whores’ Glory focuses on the lives of people involved in prostitution in three different places: the elegant Fish Tank, a high-end brothel in Bangkok, Thailand; the labyrinthine “City of Joy,” in Faridpur, Bangladesh, an immense bordello where more than 600 prostitutes work; and the “Zona de la tolerancia,” an outlaw district in northern Mexico where criminality runs rampant in every form.

The product of four years of work, this film not only provides an unusual level of access to normally hidden places and seldom-heard people, it is also a powerful cinematic experience that transcends the prejudices that typically accompany its subject matter. Visually stunning and enhanced by a soundtrack by turns nostalgic and brutal (featuring P.J. Harvey and CocoRosie, among others), Whores’ Glory is of a piece with the filmmaker’s two previous documentaries: it is a sombre paean to the beauty found in the most tragic of human experiences.
