Master Class With Joe Bini
Characterization in the Documentary
As the lines between fiction and non-fiction continue to blur in documentary form, techniques that were once the exclusive domain of narrative film are, more and more, finding their way into the documentary. This is particularly true when tasked with trying to bring to life the personae dramatis of a film. Elevating subjects from the realm of “real people” to the realm of indelible cinematic characters often requires stretching filmic boundaries.
Showing clips from his films and drawing on his close working relationship with Werner Herzog, Lynne Ramsay and others, Joe Bini will discuss characterization techniques he has developed in an editorial career fearlessly devoted to expanding the horizons of film form. These will include, among other subjects, setting up a character, building character arc blocks, an approach to inner life and the use of music.
