The world over, people considered him a hero whose wings were brutally ripped off on September 11, 1973. But for Marcia, who grew up in Mexico, Salvador Allende, the first democratically elected socialist president of Chile, was the grandfather she never knew. It is still painfully difficult for her to talk about him with her family, who would rather use silence as a shield against suffering. In 2008, 35 years after Allende’s overthrow, Marcia decided to open Pandora’s Box and get her relatives, particularly her 92-year-old grandmother, Tencha, to speak. Between a haunting past, painful exile, raw scars and the shadow of a legend, Allende mi abuelo Allende (Œil d’Or for best documentary, Cannes Film Festival 2015) blends the personal and the political into a gripping, deeply moving family story.
