Guy Maddin is without a doubt one of the most distinctive and celebrated Canadian filmmakers of the last 30 years. Since his first international success, Tales from the Gimli Hospital, the director – a diehard fan of silent film, melodrama, spiritualism and Winnipeg – has given us a steady stream of unidentified filmic objects. During the making of his latest feature, The Forbidden Room, Yves Montmayeur focused his camera on Maddin’s process in this film that won an award at the Venice Festival this year. Backstage scenes and tributes from loyal actors like Udo Kier and Isabella Rossellini enter into a dialogue with Maddin’s personal and cinematic confessions, revealing a world built on influences as far-flung as Fritz Lang, the Brothers Quay and John Waters. Welcome inside the head of a cinematic mad genius.
