Work in Progress
World Premiere
When he decided on a whim to film his first documentary, Bill Stone thought he’d found the perfect subject. Chris Overing, a jovial and charismatic young man, had just begun building a stone wall 300 metres long. Out-of-the-ordinary person, picturesque subject: The filmmaker was convinced he’d struck gold. But nothing turns out as planned. Construction progresses at a turtle’s pace, and Chris proves to be elusive and unpredictable. Anxious, depressed and irritated by his protagonist, Bill Stone spends eight years calling his documentary into question. Playful, anxious and deeply personal, Work in Progress is a fascinating reflection on artistic creation and the complex bonds between filmmaker and subject.
