The Vanishing Spring Light
Quebec Premiere
On the world cultural heritage site of Dujiangyan in southwest China, West Street has a particular significance. It has been a temple to the preservation of traditions and an authentically Chinese way of life for centuries, yet lately its integrity is being threatened by modernization and gentrification. For two years, filmmaker Xun Yu tracked the evolution of this singular street, paying particular attention to one of its oldest inhabitants, grandmother Jiang, born in 1933, who has lived here for 60 years and has a mah jong den in her living room. Surrounded by her family, she lives out her final years as the street lives out its own. A documentary filmed in the purest live tradition, as sweeping as it is moving.
