Frederick Wiseman’s last three films dealt with the human body in motion (La danse, Boxing Gym and Crazy Horse), but his latest, At Berkeley, focuses on discourse. Speaking out is a basic part of life at the oldest, most prestigious public university in the United States, the University of California, Berkeley. Under the gaze of 35-year Wiseman collaborator John Davey’s attentive camera students, professors, deans and administrators debate the role of public education, social and racial diversity in America, the effect of budget cuts on the quality of education and the legitimacy of student protests. Always discreet and incisive, Wiseman gives us a glimpse of the future of higher education.
