At the end of the ocean is the majestic southernmost continent, inhabited by humans but still teeming with other life. Jóhann Jóhannsson, the acclaimed composer of film scores (Prisoners, Sicario, The Theory of Everything), captures Antarctica through a series of tableaux filmed in grainy black & white Super 8. It is a hypnotic experience, inspired by Timothy Morton’s theory of dark ecology. In a symphony in which the human voice has no part, the cacophony of birds joins the notes of a cello (the director clearly worked on the music as well). Like an explorer’s film from 1900, End of Summer witnesses the shortening of days before the polar night, and the fragility of a place that already seems to be the memory of a lost world.
